Obituary for Carl Ernest Schroeder of Wayne, New Jersey
November 25th, 1959 - November 23, 2025.
Presented by his brother Leonard Schroeder.
It is with Great Sadness to announce the passing of Carl Ernest Schroeder. Also known affectionately as “Hans” by many of his friends and family. Carl held two degrees from Fairly Dickinson University and was his Fraternity President. He is survived by siblings Debora Morton, Carol Petrillo, Leonard Schroeder, and multiple Nieces and Nephews.
HOLD IT! I’m going to change the formal “obituary tone” and speak about my Brother who we all knew and loved.
“Leona” he would often yell to me when he picked up the phone! His caller ID would say “Leona” is calling instead of Leonard. I would address him as “Hans” a nickname he got for being Dutch at his Fraternity. Talking to Carl, “Hans”, was like an amusement ride. You never knew what surprises may pop up. Going out in public together could be terrifying! We were the Schroeder Boys until Carl would say something off color and I would cringe. I always tried to bring an air of respectability and Carl would say exactly what he was thinking. I couldn’t help but laugh, rolling my eyes, wishing I could be so careless with my commentary.
Carl had so many friends! In fact Walter has been his best friend since they were four years old. I asked Carl’s long time friend Donna “why do you put up with him”? She said “We just love him”. Somehow Carl could get you to do things for him that he wouldn’t do himself. (Can I get an Amen?!!) The one thing Carl did better than anyone was keeping in touch. He had more friends than anyone I know. He cherished those friendships and loved you all!
Carl could infuriate you!! He’d Complain about things he could often do something about, or he’d just complain. I have this vision of Carl being in Heaven complaining about the food, and him being reminded, “if you’d like they’re having BBQ a few levels down”! It regularly caught me off guard when Carl would talk about his faith. His Christian theology of faith in Jesus Christ saving us from our sin was genuine. He would sometimes put me to shame telling me how often he prayed.
Carl loved the family! It didn’t stop him from driving us crazy but his love for all of us was sincere. Being Thanksgiving, I’m reminded of how Carl made Hubbard Squash. He wanted to extend the tradition held by our Maternal Grandfather Lindner. Carl would tell me how hard it was breaking it open by smashing it in the driveway or by driving over it with his car. ...I never ate any! One Thanksgiving he tried to pass off Boston Market squash for Hubbard but one of our sisters called him out. It was that same Thanksgiving Carl, our Father and I took a long ride in a classic mustang. Our Father shocked us saying, “My Boys”. It was a rare and tender affectionate moment Carl & I spoke of often.
After Carl passed, I was the last one leaving his hospital room I leaned over my hand on his shoulder and whispered to him “You could make me CRAZY, but I’m proud to have you as my Brother”.
Thank you for indulging me with my memories. If coming to Carl’s services please note this will be the first time he’s ever arrived on time!!
