Charles “Chuck” Nouhan of Clifton, NJ, passed away on April 18, 2026. He was born in Paterson, NJ on July 31, 1933, to the late Mary “Marie” (Balady) and Sarkis Nouhan.

Chuck was the cherished husband of Phyllis Joan (Pecci) for 71 years. His frequent refrain, “I was born, and there was Phyllis,” spoke of his inability to imagine life without her by his side, where she remained with steadfast love and devotion.

A proud graduate of Paterson’s Eastside High School Class of June 1951, Chuck enjoyed his role as the Chairman of the Reunion Committee, helping his classmates stay connected while also serving on the class scholarship committee.

In 1960, Chuck was one of four founding partners of Four Star Agency, Inc. in Clifton. He became the sole owner and Broker of Record from the late 1960s onward, serving the City of Clifton and surrounding towns. Along with specializing in residential and commercial real estate, as well as insurance sales, Chuck was a past member of the Passaic County Board of Realtors and served as its treasurer in the 1990s.

Chuck’s strong work ethic began at the age of seven, working as a shoeshine boy, and continued throughout his life, only semi-retiring at 90, declaring, “It’s been a nice run.” The Four Star Building on Van Houten Avenue in Clifton will remain a testament to his hard work and the tremendous success that he achieved with the unwavering desire to provide for and care for others.

A devoted family man, Chuck went to great lengths to provide not only for his family but also for his extended family, friends, and strangers. His immense generosity was surpassed only by his ability and willingness to advise, guide, and problem-solve, instilling a sense of security and comfort in all who knew him. Chuck made time for everyone, and at his core there existed a deep sense of humor that remained throughout his final days.

Along with their young family, Chuck and Phyllis moved from Paterson to Clifton in 1962. They raised three children in their home in the Richfield section, where he passed with dignity while surrounded by the love of his family, as was his wish.

Chuck was an extraordinary father and grandfather who valued and encouraged education. He took great pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren and the role that he played in their lives. In addition to Phyllis, he is survived by his loving children and son-in-law, who were devoted to his care; sons Charles (partner Maureen Haig) and Mark (fiancée Patricia Lord), and daughter Kim and her husband Luca Puzzo. A builder of treehouses, ocean buddy, chauffeur, and a champion of all endeavors, Chuck was adored by his grandsons Sebastian, Benjamin, Kirk, and Ethan Nouhan and his granddaughter Ariana Puzzo.

Chuck is also survived by his brother, Joseph Nouhan, Esq., as well as his loyal friend Charles Alfieri, who ensured the brothers stayed connected with frequent road trips to Connecticut to visit Joe. He also enjoyed the love and company of his many nieces and nephews, all of whom held him in high esteem.

Chuck was predeceased by his brothers George, John, and Harry Nouhan and sisters Frances Martone Florentine, Matilda Kleber, Yvonne McKay, and Victoria Nouhan.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Theresa Soroko and her staff for their incomparable care, compassion, and support, along with the Clifton Fire Department and EMTs, and the Clifton Police Department. The dignity and respect that Chuck could maintain in his final years were also, in no small part, thanks to the daily care of Marvella Nelson, Shella Melbourne, and Brigitta Baffoe.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Charles Nouhan to The Clifton Education Foundation, Inc. P.O. Box 2071, Clifton, NJ 07015, which supports the Clifton Public Schools community in the city that Chuck helped so many realize the dream of owning a home. www.cliftoneducationfoundation.org
