Christine O. (Berezowskyj) Hnatczuk, a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, passed away on March 14, 2026, in Wayne, New Jersey. Born August 13, 1940, in Chemnitsya, Ukraine, Christine journeyed to the United States as a young girl, where she unknowingly met her future husband on the ship carrying their families to their new home. She touched the lives of many with her thoughtful nature and dedication to her community.
Christine and her parents settled in Detroit, Michigan where she became an active member of the Ukrainian community. Her favorite times were spent as a Ukrainian girl scout in PLAST, particularly in the summer camps at Dibrova. This special place is where she once again saw her future husband, Wsewolod. For Christine this was their first meeting, but Wsewolod remembered her from the ship. She and “Dushko,” as she affectionately called him, would meet up on weekends at Dibrova. They were often seen holding hands as a testament of their love, a fond family memory. The pair fully participated in the Ukrainian community, shared a passion for volunteering, and mentored many Ukrainians to support other Plast scouts.
Their growing family was Christine’s first priority as a homemaker, but this did not stop her from pursuing other interests. She combined her passions for history and for the Ukrainian community by becoming a teacher at Ridna Schkola Ukrainian School. She taught history and geography until she was called to become the principal. She utilized her skills to prepare many PLAST groups for Orlikiada competitions, a Ukrainian quiz bowl focusing on the history and culture of Ukraine. Through her dedication and influence, she imparted knowledge and love for Ukrainian culture and heritage to countless students and scouts over the years.
After Wsewolod’s passing, Christine relocated to Clifton, New Jersey, to be with family. There, she continued her love for nature and Ukrainian culture. Her lifelong involvement with the Ukrainian National Women's League of America - Soyuz Ukrainok and Plast Ukrainian Scouting Organization further exemplified her commitment to preserving and celebrating her Ukrainian roots.
Christine's legacy is carried on by her loving family: her daughter, Oksana Hnatczuk; her son, Myron Hnatczuk and his wife, Marta; her cherished grandchildren, Maksym Hnatczuk, Lida Hnatczuk, Daniel Wanio, and Lena Wanio; and her brother, Oleh Berezowskyj. She is reunited in death with her beloved Dushko, and her son, Roman Hnatczuk, who preceded her in passing.
Those who knew Christine will remember her avid beliefs, strong passion, and love for debate. Christine will never be forgotten for her honesty, comedic timing, and quiet gestures. Her unwavering commitment to her family, culture, and community will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known her.
Christine's life was a testament to the power and strength of the human spirit. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who were touched by her remarkable presence. All can rest easy knowing she is holding hands with Dushko again, her greatest source of happiness. As we bid farewell to Christine O. Hnatczuk, we celebrate a life well-lived: full of love, service, and the grace that she so effortlessly embodied.
