Edward Bashkanji of Paterson, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on March 27, 1941, in Aleppo, Syria, Edward's life was a testament to his loving, kind, and wise nature, which touched the hearts of all who knew him. He first came to the United States in 1959 and lived in Clifton for one year before returning to Syria. It was there that he married his beloved wife Najat and together they made many journeys over the years back and forth between Syria and Clifton before finally settling permanently in the United States in 2022.
In his professional life, Edward was a respected contractor in Syria, where his hard work and dedication were evident in every project he undertook. His reputation for quality and integrity in his work was well-known, and he was deeply involved in his community, contributing to its growth and prosperity.
Mr. Bashkanji is survived by his devoted wife, Najat (nee Aslo) Bashkanji, and their three sons, Rezkallah and his wife Jizel Masri, Michael and his wife Roubi Hamoui, and Joseph and his wife Najat Aslo, all of Clifton. He was a proud grandfather to Nadeen, Naya, Edward, Mark, Pamela and Edward Bashkanji and was predeceased by his three dear siblings: brother Michael Bashkanji, sister Baheja Bashkanji, and brother Joseph Bashkanji. His legacy will live on through his loving family and the many lives he touched.
Edward's faith was a cornerstone of his life. A faithful parishioner of Sacred Heart Armenian Catholic Church in Little Falls, he lived his beliefs through his actions, embodying the Christian values of love, charity, and compassion. His commitment to his faith community was unwavering, and he served as a shining example of living one's faith in daily life.
Those who knew Edward will remember him for his warm smile, his gentle guidance, and his willingness to lend a helping hand. His wisdom was sought by many, and he was always ready to offer words of comfort and encouragement. Edward's love for his family was unparalleled, and he instilled in them the importance of kindness, respect, and the value of strong family bonds.
As we bid farewell to Edward Bashkanji, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of love and purpose. His memory will be cherished and kept alive in the stories shared by those who were fortunate enough to have been part of his journey.
