George J. Homcy, 95, of Woodland Park, passed away on April 15, 2025.
George served as Executive Director of the Nicholas Martini Foundation in Clifton, from April 1, 2002 until Dec. 31, 2004 when the Foundation was relocated to New York City.
Previously, he was the long-time President of the North Jersey Regional Chamber of Commerce, Clifton from January, 1974 to March 15, 2002.
Reporter and columnist at The Herald News, from November, 1953 to January, 1969, when he moved to the copy desk, serving first as assistant night editor, then as night editor. He left the paper in December 1973.
Began his career in journalism in February, 1948 at the old Paterson Evening News. He was drafted into the Army in April, 1951 at the height of the Korean War. After basic training at Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, he was shipped to Germany and assigned to AFN-the American Forces Network, one of the most powerful radio networks in the world. He was a newswriter and newscaster at AFN’s headquarters in Hoechst, outside of Frankfurt, and later was assigned as correspondent in Bremerhaven and Munich. He wrote and aired his own local news programs as a correspondent and also did on-air reports of national and world events.
Over the years, Homcy has served on the boards of directors of the former Center Savings and Loan Association, Clifton; the Boys’ & Girls’ Club of Clifton; the United Way of Passaic Valley, and St. Mary’s Hospital, Passaic. He is a former president of the Pica Club, the area’s newspapermen’s association, and a former member of the Clifton Lions Club, New Jersey Press Association, American Chamber of Commerce Executives, New Jersey Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives, the Clifton Golden Jubilee Parade Committee, the Passaic County District Ethics Committee, appointed by the New Jersey Supreme Court, and the Business Advisory Council at Montclair State University. Homcy also served on the Grand Jury in Passaic County in 2005.
Homcy is a former long-time member of Upper Montclair Country Club, Clifton. He and his wife of 68 years, the former Elaine Andrusin, attend St. Paul’s R.C. Church, Clifton. The couple has four children, Jane Homcy Merenda, Alan Homcy, Paul Homcy and his wife, April and the late Jill Homcy; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The Homcys have lived in Garret Mountain, Woodland Park, since 1966.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 22, 2025 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Avenue, Clifton. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at 9:15 am from the funeral home followed by a 10:00 am Mass at St. Paul’s R.C. Church, 124 Union Avenue, Clifton. Interment to follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Montclair. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bergen County Audubon Society, P.O.
