George G. Petropoulakis, 79, of Clifton, passed away Wednesday, December 13, 2023. Born in Wierton, West Virginia, Mr. Petropoulakis was raised in Athens, Greece where he graduated high school. He applied to Loyola University in Chicago where he was accepted. He was returning to the United States to attend college, however, he received news that his father had passed away and decided to move to Connecticut to work with his uncle at the family diner. A few years later he relocated to New Jersey to work and that is where he met the love of his life, Julie. They eloped and moved to Pittsburgh for about one year. They moved back to Jersey City, New Jersey to be closer to his wife’s family. In 1974, he and his partners purchased Rutt’s Hut in Clifton, NJ and shortly after he moved his family to Clifton where he raised a beautiful family and worked hard. The stories of his generosity far exceed the words on a page. Mr. Petropoulakis was a faithful member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Clifton.
He is survived by his beloved wife Julie (née Lahanas); three devoted children, George Petropoulakis Jr., Vasilios Lahanas and his wife Sophia and Kalliope Vergis and her husband, Efthimios; and five loving grandchildren, George, Rigo and Julie Lahanas and Angeliki and Ioulia Vergis.
