George Swaryczewsky (born Nykyfor Nykolaj George Swaryczewsky), 79, of Clifton, passed away, Tuesday, August 15, 2023. Born in Holoskiv, Ukraine, Mr. Swaryczewsky came to the United States in July of 1949 and his family settled in Hicksville, New York. He resided in Clifton for over 50 years. Before his retirement, Mr. Swaryczewsky was employed as a middle school orchestra teacher with the Newark Public School System.
Mr. Swaryczewsky was a faithful and active parishioner of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Passaic for many years. He loved to play golf and was a golf instructor for many years. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army and fought in the Vietnam War where he was awarded multiple medals for his service: the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, 2 Overseas Medals, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.
Survivors include: his sisters, Ulana Wowk of Edison, NJ and Christina Podoliuk of Hicksville, NY; nephews, Andrij Wowk and his wife, Larissa, Roman Podoliuk; nieces, Marta Podoliuk-Giovagnoni and her husband, Robert, Christina Collins and her husband, James and Lydia Wasylenko and her husband, Michael; great-nieces Melania Wowk, Nadia Giovagnoni, Liana Wowk, Camila Podoliuk, Alexandra Fritsch and her husband, Brian and Stephanie Collins; his great-nephews Adrian Wowk, Zevin Giovagnoni and Thomas Wasylenko and his wife, Theresa; his great-greatnephews, James and Colin Fritsch; and his great-greatniece, Elizabeth Wasylenko and extended family both in the United States and in Ukraine.
He was predeceased by his parents Atanazy Swaryczewsky and Maria Swaryczewsky (nee Romaniuk) and by his brothers-in-law, Anatole Wowk and Bohdan Podoliuk.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 18, 2023 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Ave., Clifton. Parastas Friday 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 9:15 am from the funeral home followed by 10:00 Mass at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 217 President Street, Passaic, NJ 07055. Interment to follow at St. Andrew Cemetery, South Bound Brook, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church.
