In Loving Memory of Inocencia “Chen” Cruz

December 28, 1933 – June 30, 2025

Inocencia Cruz, lovingly known as Chen, passed away peacefully at the age of 91, surrounded by the family she so fiercely loved and protected throughout her life. While many called her a friend, neighbor, or caregiver, to us she was simply the heart of our family. She was a quiet, steady presence who loved without condition and served without expectation.

Born in Camuy, Puerto Rico, Inocencia was a daughter of Ramon Velez and Carmen Cruz, whose deep faith and love for family shaped the woman she would become. She was one of seven surviving siblings and shared her early years with Ignacia, Milagros, Primitivo, Natividad, Carlos, and the late Cruzita. These bonds remained dear to her throughout her life. Growing up in the lush hills of Camuy during the 1930s, Inocencia’s early life was one of modest means but abundant love. She learned the values of hard work, resourcefulness, and compassion. Those values became the foundation of her life.

Like many of her generation, Inocencia came to Paterson, New Jersey during a time when the city was a hub of manufacturing and opportunity. There, she built a life alongside her beloved husband, Avelino Cruz. They were married for nearly 50 years and were true partners in every sense. Together, they raised a family, shared their faith, and worked hard to create a better future. Inocencia spent years laboring in local factories. She contributed not only to her own household but also to the heartbeat of a thriving industrial economy. Her hands, tired but steady, helped shape the future, piece by piece and paycheck by paycheck, while she kept her home full of warmth, food, and love.

Inocencia was a master teacher in the school of life. Despite limited educational resources, she was a natural learner, an avid reader of the bible with a sharp mind and a gift for numbers. She may have been small in size, but her love, generosity, and spirit were larger than life. She raised four children: Brunilda (now resting in heaven), Sara (with husband Pedro), Francisco (with wife Maria), and Hector. Inocencia also helped raise ten grandchildren and countless other children as a trusted and beloved nanny. Her home was always open. It was a safe place where arroz con gandules was always on the stove and laughter echoed in every room. She took great pride in keeping family traditions alive, especially during the holidays, when she would spend hours lovingly preparing homemade pasteles. These were a labor of love that she gifted to family, friends, and neighbors alike.

Her grandchildren — Emelinda, Melissa, Janet, Annette, Milivel, Lorraine, Christie, Francisco Jr., Olivia, and Matthew — and her 18 great-grandchildren were constant sources of joy in her later years. They knew her love not through grand gestures, but through the small, consistent ways she made each person feel special.

Inocencia’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. A devout Christian, she was known for her heartfelt prayers and her voice lifted in song during worship. Her love for God shone through in her generosity, humility, and tireless care for others. She prayed often for her family, friends, and community, and her faith never wavered.

Later in life, she found joy and connection in her community at Martin de Porres Village. Her cheerful spirit and friendly greetings made her a beloved neighbor and friend.

She is now reunited in eternal peace with her husband, Avelino, and her daughter, Brunilda. She leaves behind a family whose roots are strong because of her, whose lives are better because of her sacrifices, and whose hearts are forever marked by her grace.

To know Inocencia was to be loved by her. And to be loved by her was to know a love that was patient, faithful, and true. We will carry her voice, her lessons, and her prayers with us always.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, 7/8/2025 from 4pm - 8pm at Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Avenue, Clifton.

Funeral services will follow on Wednesday 7/9/2025 at 11am at the funeral home, with interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Totowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Inocencia’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

En Memoria de Inocencia “Chen” Cruz

Inocencia Cruz, cariñosamente conocida como Chen, partió en paz a sus 91 años, rodeada por la familia que tanto amó y protegió con todo su corazón a lo largo de su vida. Aunque muchos la conocían como amiga, vecina o cuidadora, para nosotros ella fue, sencillamente, el corazón de nuestra familia. Siempre fue una presencia tranquila y constante, que amaba sin condiciones y servía sin esperar nada a cambio.

Nacida en Camuy, Puerto Rico, Inocencia fue hija de Ramón Vélez y Carmen Cruz, quienes le inculcaron una profunda fe y un amor inmenso por la familia, valores que definieron la mujer que llegó a ser. Fue una de siete hermanos que sobrevivieron y compartió su niñez con Ignacia, Milagros, Primitivo, Natividad, Carlos y la fallecida Cruzita. Esos lazos familiares siempre ocuparon un lugar especial en su corazón. Creció entre las verdes montañas de Camuy en los años 30, en un hogar humilde, pero lleno de amor. Desde pequeña aprendió el valor del trabajo duro, la humildad y la compasión. Esos valores fueron el cimiento de su vida.

Como muchos de su generación, Inocencia emigró a Paterson, Nueva Jersey, en una época en que la ciudad era un centro de fábricas y oportunidades. Allí formó su vida junto a su amado esposo, Avelino Cruz. Estuvieron casados casi 50 años y fueron verdaderos compañeros en todo el sentido de la palabra. Juntos criaron a su familia, compartieron su fe y trabajaron duro para construir un mejor futuro. Inocencia pasó muchos años trabajando en fábricas locales, contribuyendo no solo al bienestar de su hogar, sino también al motor de la economía industrial de la ciudad. Sus manos, cansadas pero firmes, ayudaron a construir el porvenir, jornada tras jornada y cheque tras cheque, mientras mantenía su hogar lleno de calidez, comida y mucho amor.

Inocencia fue una gran maestra en la escuela de la vida. A pesar de no tener muchos recursos educativos, siempre fue una aprendiz natural, una lectora apasionada de la Biblia, con una mente aguda y un don para los números. Aunque era pequeña de estatura, su amor, generosidad y espíritu eran enormes. Crió a cuatro hijos: Brunilda (quien ahora descansa en el cielo), Sara (junto a su esposo Pedro), Francisco (con su esposa María) y Héctor. Además, ayudó a criar a diez nietos y a muchos otros niños como niñera, ganándose el cariño y respeto de todos los que la conocieron. Su hogar siempre estaba abierto. Era un lugar seguro, donde nunca faltaba un caldero de arroz con gandules en la estufa, y donde las carcajadas llenaban cada rincón. Se sentía muy orgullosa de mantener vivas las tradiciones familiares, especialmente durante la Navidad, cuando pasaba horas preparando con amor sus pasteles caseros. Estos pasteles eran un verdadero acto de amor que regalaba a familiares, amigos y vecinos.

Sus nietos —Emelinda, Melissa, Janet, Annette, Milivel, Lorraine, Christie, Francisco Jr., Olivia y Matthew— y sus 18 bisnietos fueron una fuente constante de alegría en sus últimos años. Ellos conocieron su amor no a través de grandes gestos, sino en las pequeñas y constantes acciones que hacían sentir especial a cada uno.

La fe de Inocencia fue el pilar de su vida. Como cristiana devota, era conocida por sus oraciones sinceras y por alzar su voz en alabanzas durante los cultos. Su amor por Dios se reflejaba en su generosidad, humildad y dedicación inquebrantable hacia los demás. Oraba con frecuencia por su familia, sus amistades y su comunidad, y su fe nunca vaciló.

En sus últimos años, encontró alegría y compañía en la comunidad de Martin de Porres Village, donde su espíritu alegre y sus saludos cariñosos la convirtieron en una vecina y amiga muy querida.

Hoy descansa en paz eterna junto a su esposo, Avelino, y su hija, Brunilda. Deja una familia con raíces fuertes gracias a ella, con vidas que son mejores por sus sacrificios y corazones que siempre estarán marcados por su gracia.

Quien conoció a Inocencia, la amó. Y ser amado por ella fue conocer un amor paciente, fiel y verdadero. Siempre llevaremos en el corazón su voz, sus enseñanzas y sus oraciones.

La velación se llevará a cabo el 8 de julio de 2025 de 4:00 p. m. a 8:00 p. m. en Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, ubicada en 1313 Van Houten Avenue, Clifton.
El servicio fúnebre se realizará el 9 de julio de 2025 a las 11:00 a. m. en la funeraria, seguido del entierro en Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, en Totowa.
