Irene Johanna (Bogle) Boughton

Irene Johanna (nee Bogle) Boughton, 97, of Franklin Lakes, formerly of Little Falls, New Jersey, and Boca Raton, Florida, passed away Friday January 17, 2025. Raised in Lyndhurst, Irene earned an Associate Degree in 1947 from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford.  Irene then resided in Little Falls with her husband Edward where they raised their daughters, Denise and Melanie, and son Edward.

Irene participated in numerous activities primarily golf and knitting. She was a member of Upper Montclair Country Club, Clifton New Jersey and Pine Tree Golf Club in Boynton Beach, Florida. She was an active member of UMCC for 60+ years, during which she was chairman of the Ladies group and chaired many committees; she was a mentor for many lady golfers. Irene was also an active member of Pine Tree Golf Club where she was the Ladies Club Champion in 1991.

Irene was a member of, and held positions in, three golf organizations. These included the Garden State Women’s Golf Association, the Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association, and the Women’s New Jersey Golf Association, where she was President from 1985-86 and received the Emerita award for her long-standing membership and contribution to the organization. During her lifetime, she was proud to have had 8 holes in one, the 8th at the age of 88. Irene was also a creative and advanced knitter. She travelled internationally for knitting workshops and was a mentor to many other knitters.

Irene was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edward Boughton in 1998, her brother William Bogle and sister, Shirley Ulrich.

Survivors include: three devoted children, Denise Irene Boughton, Melanie Ann Vespa and her husband, Anthony (Tony) Vespa and Edward Thomas Boughton; three loving grandchildren, Amy Degen Vespa, Allison Leigh Vespa-Gibbons and Anthony Charles Vespa; and one dear great-granddaughter, Elodie Irene Ahn.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation (T2T.ORG) or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC.ORG).
