John Farley Obituary

John F. Farley, a spirited and friendly soul, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2025, at the age of 76, in his hometown of Paterson, New Jersey. Born on July 17, 1948, to the late Joseph A. Farley and Marie (nee Nolan) Farley, John's life was one marked by devotion to his family, his work, and his community.

John's journey began in Paterson, NJ, where he was born and raised.  He moved to Clifton in 1977 where he and his wife raised their family. He was the beloved husband of Jo Anne (nee McGrady) Farley, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and cherished memories. A dedicated father, he leaves behind his daughters, Jacquelyn Fitzpatrick (Kevin) and Jamie Farley (Cali). His legacy continues through his adored grandchildren, Rider John, Birdie, Rowan, and Shay, who will miss their grandfather's warmth and guidance.

John was a brother and friend to so many. He is survived by his brothers, Joseph A. Farley (the late Patricia) and Edward Farley (Gerry), and was predeceased by his brother James Farley. His sister-in-law, Janet Farley, along with many nieces, nephews, and in-laws, will fondly remember John's generous spirit and infectious laughter.

A man of faith, John was a former parishioner of St. Paul R.C. Church in Clifton. His commitment to his community was evident through his service as the former President of the Clifton High School Softball Booster Club, where he cheered on and supported his love of softball which continued throughout his life.  One of his favorite pastimes was watching his daughter play softball on a hot and sunny summer day.

John's professional life was characterized by hard work and dedication. Before his well-earned retirement, he was employed as a union roofer with Peck Brothers Roofing in Elmwood Park. His career in roofing began with Local 10 and JP Patti Roofing in Saddle Brook, where he honed his skills and made lifelong friendships. Even after retirement, John's love for staying active and involved led him to work part-time as a starter at the Preakness Valley Golf Course in Wayne, NJ, where he was a familiar and welcoming presence.  John was proud to have served in the United States Air Force during Vietnam.

John's life was one of engagement and joy. He was a man who could light up a room with his presence and make anyone feel like an old friend. His laughter was contagious, his stories captivating, and his ability to connect with people was truly remarkable. John's spirit and friendly demeanor left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing him. John was a lifelong New York Giants fan, regardless of how much heartbreak that involved, and he never missed watching a Yankee game. He loved golf, especially if he wasn’t keeping score, and always appreciated a good pour of bourbon, preferably in the company of family or old friends.

This spring, even as his health declined, John insisted on planting one more garden. He worked so very hard, just like he did in all aspects of his life, carefully turning soil (with a little help) and planting with the same intention and care he brought to everything else in his life. If the amount of love he put into this is any indication of the harvest, we’ll be eating well all summer. That garden, like so much of what he built, will keep giving long after he’s gone.

As we say goodbye to John F. Farley, we celebrate a life well-lived and a life filled with love, laughter, and a deep commitment to family and friends. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a loyal friend. His memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of those who loved him.

Rest in peace, John F. Farley. Your memory will forever be a beacon of joy and friendship in the lives of those you touched.
