John M. “Jack” Vilchock, 84, of Lyndhurst, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2025. Born in Taylor, Pennsylvania, John was raised in Duryea, PA and has resided in Lyndhurst for the last 42 years. Before his retirement in 2005, John was employed with ADP in Parsippany and previously the Clifton location.
John was a longtime faithful parishioner of the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel in Passaic. He was a member and served as the treasurer of the Holy Name Society. John was a veteran of the United States Air Force from 1958 until his honorable discharge in 1962.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary M. (nee Hoover) in 2020; his two brothers, Bernard Vilchock and Raymond Vilchock; and his parents, John J. and Anna (nee Mustage) Vilchock.
Survivors include: his two devoted children, Julie Vilchock Darby and her husband, Robert, Alan M. Vilchock and his wife, Liz; his loving grandson, his pride and joy, Austin Michael Vilchock, his great canine companion, Cookie, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
John moved to New Jersey after his time in the United States Air Force. His Aunt Marge Harlos helped him relocate for an opportunity with ADP where he worked for 42 years.
John was a loyal member of The American Legion Post #139 in Lyndhurst, where he was a color guard member and Commander for a number of years. His Legion family friends were a big part of his life for which he was forever grateful. He loved God, his faith, his country, and took advantage of life to the fullest.
John enjoyed traveling all over Europe with his wife Mary of over 50 years. He continued traveling with his family, including a memorable Viking River Cruise on Europe’s Danube River in 2017.
John was known for his exceptional kindness to everyone. He would always give a few “bucks” for ice cream to the kids that knew him. John could make conversation with anyone and would always say “it doesn’t hurt to be nice to people”. He made a lasting mark on everybody he came across, and was always full of wisdom, encouragement and insight when anybody needed a listening ear or advice.
John loved to take long walks, watch sports, listen to music and sing songs, especially with his grandson. His expertise was dancing to the Twist and Chicken Polka at special occasions.
John enjoyed fishing, especially with his brother Berny and his long time friend Blaine “Sonny” Christian in Pennsylvania. He enjoyed sitting by the campfire and talking with friends about old times.
