Joseph Charles Hourihan, 80, passed away peacefully on Monday August 19, 2024.
He is survived by his loving and cherished wife, Bernadette (née Shashaty) Hourihan; his two devoted children: Joseph G. Hourihan and Kathleen Hourihan; by his dear brother, Gerald Hourihan and many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was a wonderful husband and devoted father, a loving brother, son, uncle, nephew and friend.
Born and raised in Paterson, Joe attended and graduated from Seton Hall Prep in West Orange where he was a member of the track team, which is due to be inducted into the Prep’s Hall of Fame this fall. He went on to earn his Bachelors Degree from Seton Hall University and his Masters Degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University, both degrees in Chemistry. He had a gratifying career as a Chemist, retiring fifteen years ago from Playtex Corp. in Allendale, NJ.
Joe loved sports and had many interests, but his favorite was golf. He loved to play and watch golf and was a member of Paupack Hills Golf and Country Club in Greentown, PA for over twenty years and enjoyed countless rounds of golf there with all the friends he and Bernadette made in the Tanglewood Community; he and Bernadette enjoyed many victories playing bridge at the Wayne Adult Community Center where they made many new friends; he played tennis; he became a skeet shooter; he loved being the captain of his boat on Lake Wallenpaupack; he was a fan of the Jets and Yankees; he loved western movies and books; he was a boy scout and a scout leader; he attended his children’s sporting events; he was the leader of the Dapka, a middle eastern dance, for the Shashaty family; he was a generous host for innumerable events for family and friends. Most importantly, Joe loved and cared for his family and friends and was loved tremendously by Bernadette, Joseph, Kathleen and all who knew him.
Joe was predeceased by his dearly missed parents, Joseph Francis and Margaret (née Mulrooney) Hourihan and his cherished late aunt and uncle Catherine and Gerald Fitzpatrick, who generously enabled him to attend Seton Hall Prep.
