Joseph Tolvay Obituary

Joseph G. Tolvay, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, in Saddle Brook, New Jersey, at the age of 82. Born on February 5, 1943, in Passaic, New Jersey, Joseph was a man of selfless devotion, passionate endeavors, and a friendly demeanor that touched the hearts of all who knew him.

Joseph's early years were spent in the close-knit community of Passaic, where he attended Passaic High School and laid the foundation for a life full of achievements and meaningful relationships. After graduating, he moved to Saddle Brook, where he would eventually start and nurture his own family. In 1985, he married the love of his life, Eugenia "Jeanie" (nee Vereschagin) Tolvay, and together they raised a family that would be his pride and joy.

Joseph's professional life was marked by dedication and leadership. For 25 years, he served as the General Manager of Holiday Bowl in Oakland, where his influence and guidance were felt by both staff and patrons. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to own the Pro Shop at Wallington Lanes for 12 years, further cementing his legacy in the bowling community.

Bowling was not just a career for Joseph; it was a passion that he pursued with excellence. His commitment to the sport was recognized with his induction into both the Passaic & Bergen Bowling Hall of Fame and the New Jersey State Bowling Hall of Fame. Joseph's name became synonymous with bowling excellence, especially after he became the first person to bowl a perfect 300 game at Wallington Lanes. For 30 years, he competed in national bowling tournaments, showcasing his skill and sportsmanship.

Joseph's life was a testament to the love and bonds of family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Eugenia "Jeanie"; his loving children, Annamarie Kosturko (Michael), Joseph G. Tolvay, Jr. (Sharon), Catherine Smith (Edward), and Elizabeth Hermanson (Werner); and his adoring grandchildren, Anastasia, Justin, Nadine, Heather, and Matthew. His legacy continues with his great-grandchild, Athena, who brought him immense joy in his later years. Joseph was predeceased by his brother, John Tolvay, and sister-in-law, Barbara Tolvay, both of whom he held dear in his heart.

Joseph's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with the threads of kindness, generosity, and a warm spirit that made everyone feel like family. His absence will be deeply felt, but his memory will live on in the countless lives he touched. Joseph G. Tolvay's story is one of a life well-lived and well-loved, and he will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
