Born in Clifton, N.J. to George Karl Lorenz and Marie (nee Caspar) - Lorenz both of whom emigrated from Germany in the mid 1920’s.
Ken was a 1950 graduate of Central High School Paterson, NJ.
He attended Julliard School of Music 1950 as a piano major before being drafted into the US Army in 1954. Ken also studied jazz piano with the late Lenny Tristano. Ken attended Montclair State College earning his BS and his Masters degrees in Music in 1973. He taught Instrumental music at Franklin Ave. Middle School and the Elementary schools in Franklin Lakes NJ and retired in 1995 after 25 years of teaching.
Quite a few of his public school students became accomplished musicians which made him very happy.
As a young musician in High School he played numerous recitals and also performed at Carnegie Hall in 1948 with The Sorosoto Symphonic Accordion Society. He also worked as a freelance musician throughout his life playing solo piano and playing with small groups. He had a love of Classical and Jazz music and Astronomy.
Ken was a lifetime member of Local 16-248 AFM.
After his retirement he enjoyed his daily hikes to Mahlon Dickerson Reservation or the Delaware Water Gap.
He did finally hike to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite after initially exclaiming the last part of the trek was “for professional climbers-right?!!!”
He was a man devoted to his family and loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a kind and gentle soul.
Ken had a great sense of humor and was always a complete pleasure to be with.
