Leonard "Len" VanderWende, a cherished soul whose life journey began on July 13, 1938, in Paterson, New Jersey, concluded his earthly chapter on December 17, 2025, in the same hospital that he was born. Len's life was marked by unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and his community, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and joy.
Len was the beloved husband of Antoinette "Toni" VanderWende (nee Candela) for a remarkable 63 years. Their enduring marriage was a testament to their deep love and mutual respect. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Laura DeVoti (husband Matthew), and Steven Vanderwende (wife Stacey). Len's joy multiplied with the arrival of his four grandchildren, Mitchell and Evan Vanderwende and Matthew and Julie DeVoti, who will carry forward his spirit of generosity and kindness.
Len was a proud graduate of Central High School in Paterson and William Paterson College in Wayne. After completing his studies, Len dedicated 39 years of service to PSE&G, retiring as a Marketing Representative from the Paramus office. His colleagues remember him as a man of integrity and wit, always ready to lend a helping hand.
Len's patriotism was reflected in his service to the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1962. As a veteran, he carried the values of discipline and camaraderie throughout his life, often sharing stories of his time in the service.
As Past President of the Clifton Western Division Little League, he poured his heart into coaching baseball and basketball, shaping the lives of young athletes with his optimistic outlook and selfless nature. His laughter and words of encouragement echoed on the fields and courts where he spent countless hours mentoring and cheering on his teams.
Len's love for the outdoors was matched by his passion for golf. His friends at Preakness Valley Golf Course in Wayne knew him as always ready for a friendly competition or to share a tip or two.
A man of deep faith, Len was a long-time attendee of St. Philip the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Clifton. His faith-filled life was an inspiration to many, as he lived out his beliefs through acts of kindness and a steadfast commitment to his spiritual community.
Len VanderWende's life was a beautiful example of optimism, creativity, and selflessness. He will be remembered as a man who made the world a brighter place simply by being in it. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Len's journey on earth has ended, but the story of his impact is far from over.
