Maatje "Mikki" Epperlein Obituary

Born Maatje Hoogland on October 31st 1941, she grew upin Amsterdam, Netherlands, in the aftermath of World War 2, the middle child of 5. Maatje came to Fort Lee, NJ at age 24, in search of the American Dream and worked in NYC as a fur finisher.

She joined a local ski club, where she met her beloved husband, Richard H. Epperlein. Together they belonged to the German singing club the Liederkranz, where their friends gave her the nickname “Mikki”. Rich and Mikki were happily married for 45 beautiful years. Mikki became a full-timehomemaker and created a loving and joyful home in Waldwick and later in Washington Township, NJ. There they raised their two wonderful children, Jennifer and John.

Mikki and Rich were the epitome of warmth and affection, well known for their ballroom dancing and hosting their annual 4th of July pool party. During the holidays their home was filled with the aroma of Mikki’s 12 varieties of famous freshly baked Christmas cookies. Cookie trays became a holiday tradition that friends and family looked forward to for over 40 years. Mikki’s hands also worked magic in the form of quilts, a labor of love she bestowed upon countless weddings and newborns. She knitted sweaters, scarves, mittens and adorable stuffed animals, spreading happiness with each whimsical creation she would gift or donate.   One to never have idle hands, Mikki also sewed Baptismal bibs for Calvary Lutheran Church for over 30 years. Her memory lives on in the hundreds of creations she has shared with friends and family.

Mikki’s true love was her role as devoted wife, mother, homemaker, grandmother ‘Oma’, and friend. She poured her heart and soul into her beloved children and grandchildren, instilling in them values of fairness, kindness, and hard work.

After Richard retired, they enjoyed traveling- Vermont, the Baltics, Hawaii, the Caribbean, South Africa, and parts of Europe to name a few, often with lifelong friends. She enjoyedhosting large groups for dinner parties and holidays, drinking red wine and sharing stories. Her Thursdays were dedicated to her precious grandchildren, whom she cooked for and lovinglylooked after. Her presence was a gift beyond measure and her memory will forever be cherished.

Mikki was predeceased by her missed husband, Richard H. Epperlein, who passed away December 25, 2019, as well as by two dear siblings: her brother Yon Hoogland and sister Bere Bruin.

She is survived by her two devoted children: Jennifer Epperlein Ngo and her husband, Alexander, of Summit; and John Epperlein and his wife, Andrea, of Newfoundland; her two siblings: brother Freek Hoogland and sister Reina Hoogland; and by her three cherished grandchildren: Charlotte, Merel and Aaron and beloved step grandchild Aidan.
