Santiago Fernando Lainez-Choez, 71, of Paterson passed away on April 1, 2026 in the comfort of having his family at his bedside. Born on May 27, 1954, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, he lived a life marked by devotion to education and his family.

Santiago was born and raised in Guayaquil, where he developed the drive, curiosity, and tenacity that would guide him throughout his life. He was a member of the 5th graduating class of Collegio Normalista-Leonidas Garcia and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from La Universidad Estatal de Guayaquil where he served as Secretary of the Student Association and later continued his studies in the United States, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts from Fairleigh Dickinson University. His love of learning was matched by his love of teaching, and he carried both with him throughout the better part of his career.

In Ecuador, Santiago worked with children all over the country and finally as a Professor of Philosophy and Mathematics at the Universidad de Guayaquil, where he was also the former leader of the Magistrate before coming to the United States in the winter of 1986 and settling in Paterson, where he remained for the rest of his life.

He worked tirelessly to build a stable future for his family, employed first as a Furniture Fabricator with IPF International in Paterson, NJ and later in countertop manufacturing with Corinthian Manufacturing in Allendale, NJ. He was a talented craftsman and gained the skills he would use to rebuild his family home on Delaware Ave. After seeing his daughters through their own educations, Santiago returned to the classroom as a Substitute Teacher for the Paterson Board of Education, where he served for ten years before retiring in March 2020. He especially loved teaching students with special needs and often sought longer-term substitute assignments so that he could make a greater difference in the lives of the children he worked with. He was a man blessed with a genuine gift for teaching and always provided a calm presence.

Among his many interests and talents, Santiago was well-traveled having taken various cross-country road trips to see America and Canada, traveling to South America and multiple trips to Europe. He was a published author and a lover of music, especially indulging in Spanish romantic ballads. He enjoyed music as much as good seafood especially un buen encebollado or ceviche and Lobsters on the Beach! He had a strong interest in metaphysics, reflecting a mind that was always searching and exploring. He will be remembered with love for his ability to make everyone feel like family, encouraging others to be their best and providing a never wavering friendship to those he loved.

Santiago held a special place in his heart for extended family, especially his late Mother-in-Law and Sister-in-laws who he welcomed as family from the minute he married the Love of His Life, Jully in 1974. His nieces and nephews, here and in Ecuador brought him endless pride and joy. He cherished every moment spent with them—whether sharing stories, offering guidance, or simply enjoying their laughter. To them, he was more than an uncle; he was a steady presence, a source of warmth, and someone who believed deeply in their potential. His love for them was constant and generous, and the memories they created together will remain a lasting testament to the bond they shared.

Santiago is survived by his beloved wife, Julia Lainez of Paterson; his daughters: Sandra Lainez and her husband Corey Schmid of Paterson, Priscilla Lainez and her husband Gerardo Portela of Paterson, and Alice Lainez and her husband Michael Rutkowski of Verona; his granddaughters, Emilia Laine Rutkowski and Camila Juliet Schmid; and siblings Teresa Huayamave, Franklin Lainez, Eddy Lainez, and Alejandro Lainez. He was predeceased by his brothers Freddy Lainez, Francisco E. Lainez, and Carlos Lainez, and his sister Flor Lainez and parents Francisco Lainez and Delia Lainez-Choez. He will be missed by his pet cat, Tiny.

Visiting will be held on Monday April 6 th from 4-8pm at Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Avenue, Clifton. Funeral Tuesday April 7 th beginning 9:00am at the funeral home followed by 10:00am funeral mass at St. Paul RC Church, cor. Union Avenue and Second Street, Clifton. Santiago Fernando Lainez-Choez, de 71 años, residente de Paterson, falleció el 1 de Abril de 2026, rodeado del amor y la compañía de su familia junto a su lecho. Nació el 27 de Mayo el año 1954 en Guayaquil, Ecuador, y vivió una vida marcada por su profunda dedicación a la educación y a su familia.

Santiago nació y creció en Guayaquil, donde desarrolló la disciplina, curiosidad y fortaleza que lo guiaron a lo largo de toda su vida. Formó parte de la quinta promoción de graduados del Colegio Normalista Leonidas García y obtuvo su Licenciatura en Matemáticas en la Universidad Estatal de Guayaquil, donde también se desempeñó como Secretario de la Asociación de Estudiantes. Más adelante, continuó sus estudios en los Estados Unidos, obteniendo una Licenciatura en Artes Liberales de Fairleigh Dickinson University. Su amor por el aprendizaje fue tan grande como su pasión por enseñar, y ambas vocaciones lo acompañaron durante gran parte de su vida.

En Ecuador, Santiago trabajó con niños en distintas partes del país y finalmente se desempeñó como Profesor de Filosofía y Matemáticas en la Universidad de Guayaquil, donde también fue líder del cuerpo docente. En el invierno de 1986 emigró a los Estados Unidos, estableciéndose en Paterson, lugar que llamó hogar por el resto de su vida.

Trabajó incansablemente para construir un futuro estable para su familia. Comenzó como fabricante de muebles y luego trabajó en la fabricación de encimeras con la Corporación Corinthian. Fue un artesano talentoso, habilidades que utilizó para reconstruir el hogar familiar en la avenida Delaware. Tras ver a sus hijas completar sus estudios, regresó a las aulas como maestro sustituto para el Distrito Escolar de Paterson, donde sirvió durante diez años hasta su retiro en marzo de 2020. Sentía un cariño especial por enseñar a estudiantes con necesidades especiales, y con frecuencia buscaba asignaciones más largas para poder marcar una diferencia significativa en sus vidas. Tenía un profundo interés en la metafísica, reflejo de una mente siempre inquieta y en constante búsqueda. Será recordado con amor por su capacidad de hacer sentir a todos como familia, por alentar a los demás a dar lo mejor de sí mismos y por ofrecer una amistad firme e incondicional.

Santiago guardaba un lugar muy especial en su corazón para su familia extendida, especialmente para su difunta suegra y sus cuñadas, a quienes acogió como propias desde el momento en que se casó con el amor de su vida, Jully en 1974. Sus sobrinos y sobrinas, tanto aquí como en Ecuador, fueron fuente constante de orgullo y alegría. Atesoraba cada momento con ellos—compartiendo historias, brindando consejos o simplemente disfrutando de sus risas. Para ellos, fue más que un tío: fue una presencia constante, un refugio de cariño y alguien que siempre creyó en su potencial. Su amor generoso permanecerá vivo en los recuerdos que juntos construyeron.

Le sobreviven su amada esposa, Julia Lainez de Paterson; sus hijas: Sandra Lainez y su esposo Corey Schmid de Paterson, Priscilla Lainez y su esposo Gerardo Portela de Paterson, y Alice Lainez y su esposo Michael Rutkowski de Verona; sus nietas Emilia Laine Rutkowski y Camila Juliet Schmid; y sus hermanos Teresa Huayamave, Franklin Lainez, Eddy Lainez y Alejandro Lainez.
