Somaya Gorab Obituary

Somaya Gorab, cherished by all who knew her, passed away on May 22, 2026, in Passaic, New Jersey, at the age of 95.

Born on August 16, 1930, Somaya was raised in Garfield, New Jersey, and later made Clifton her home for all of her adult life. She lived a long and meaningful life marked by devotion to her family, her faith, and her community. Those who knew her will remember her as a loving, kind, and selfless woman whose presence brought warmth and comfort to everyone around her.

Somaya was the beloved wife of the late Nicholas Gorab, with whom she shared 72 devoted years of marriage. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, and enduring commitment. Their remarkable marriage was recognized by the City of Clifton with a proclamation honoring their 70 years together, a tribute to the love and partnership they shared throughout their lives.

She was the devoted mother of Dr. Glenn N. Gorab and Gordon S. Gorab and his wife Kathleen, and she was predeceased by her daughter, Lisa Ann Gorab. Somaya was also predeceased by her brothers, Dr. Richard Fadil and Alfred Fadil. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Lauren Gorab and her husband Jamie Shafer, Nicholas Gorab, Matthew Gorab, Gordon N. Gorab, Tracy A. Gorab, Sydney J. Butler, and Brooke L. Butler. Her family was the center of her world, and she took great joy in every gathering, milestone, and memory shared with them.

A faithful member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Little Falls, Somaya lived her faith quietly and consistently through her actions, her generosity, and her compassion for others. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Peace Chapter #98 of Clifton, and the Passaic General Hospital Guild. In addition, she was a former member of the St. George Ladies Society. Through these affiliations, she formed lasting friendships and contributed her time and spirit to the organizations and people she cared about.

Somaya had a special gift in the kitchen and loved to cook and teach others how to cook. She found great happiness in sharing family recipes and passing them from one generation to the next, preserving not only meals but also memories, traditions, and the love that came with them. Her cooking was an expression of her care, and many will remember the comfort and joy she brought to others through her table and her recipes.

Her life was one of quiet strength, devotion, and grace. She gave generously of herself to her family and to those around her, and she leaves behind a legacy of kindness that will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved her. Somaya’s memory will be treasured always by her children, grandchildren, extended family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Somaya Gorab will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love, gratitude, and respect.
