On Sunday, November 7, 2021, Trina Nicole Wijangco, M.D., loving daughter, sister, niece and friend, passed away at the age of 27.
Trina, lovingly called “Ate Nina,” was born on January 13, 1994, in Hackensack, New Jersey to Leslie and Marita (Almazan) Wijangco. She was a big sister to Nicholas and Gabriella Wijangco.
She graduated fourth in her class from Clifton High School in 2012. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from New York University, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2016. Before applying to medical school, she worked at New York Veterans Hospital. She was awarded her doctorate of medicine from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in 2021. Upon graduation, she accepted the opportunity to pursue her residency in internal medicine at the Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital in New York City. Trina was a resident doctor at the time of her passing.
She was an activist who lobbied for equality. During her time at St. Luke’s University Hospital, she co-founded the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force. In the same year, she protested against voter inequality in LeHigh Valley, Pennsylvania during the 2020 presidential election. She also pursued her other passions, a skilled artist, she loved painting and drawing, an avid cook and baker, who enjoyed making delicious meals for family and friends. Most of all, she was an adventurous soul, she loved to travel and go to “obscure” places most people would not dare go.
Trina was fierce, unique and bold, yet had a big heart and was selfless towards those she loved the most. She was a ball of sunshine and lit up the room with her presence. With many stories to tell, there was never a dull time with her around. She was her family’s pride and joy.
