Usha Desai Obituary

Usha B. Desai, a beacon of love and selflessness and a devoted follower of her faith, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025, in Clifton, NJ, surrounded by the warmth and love of her family.

Usha was born on February 2, 1942 to the parents of Thakorbhai and Nirmlaben Desai in Vesma Navsari, Gujarat, India. She spent the first thirty years of her life with her birth family; her parents and siblings Ila Desai and Bipin Desai. Born into a progressive household, education was central to her upbringing. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from S.B. Garda College in Navsari and a Bachelor of Education from B. Ed College in Billimora. Her love for math propelled her into the field of education, and she proudly embraced her role as an educator, teaching students in Grades 8 through 10. Her days in India were filled with sweet memories; from taking train rides with her sister to watch Bollywood films, to playing cricket, enjoying her favorite foods, and spending summer days at her family’s farmhouse in Khudvel.

In May of 1969, Usha met her husband Bharat Desai. After one month of courtship, they  married on June 1, 1969 in Surat, India. Soon after, they began their family and took a leap of faith by immigrating to the United States, following her husband in 1972. They initially settled in Passaic before finding their forever home in Clifton in 1976. This move marked the beginning of a new chapter for Usha, who seamlessly transitioned into a new cultural world with strength and grace.

While her personal and professional achievements were commendable, Usha’s heart and soul were rooted in her family. She was the beloved wife of Bharat Desai; the cherished mother of daughters Parul Patel (and husband Neil Patel), Jayana Desai, and Sapana Desai-Gajjar (and husband Rupak Gajjar); and the adored grandmother of Sohan Patel, Shaylen Patel, Ameera Gajjar, and Zaiden Gajjar. Her unconditional love for her family was evident in her everyday choices and sacrifices, always going beyond measure to ensure their happiness. Their well-being was always at the forefront as she balanced the responsibilities of a wife and mother and her own professional aspirations.

Usha’s retirement years were anything but idle. She dedicated herself to the upbringing of her grandchildren, instilling in them the values of kindness, perseverance, and the importance of education. Her Hindu faith was a guiding light, providing strength and solace throughout her life. Usha’s interests were diverse as her talents; she was an excellent cook, known for her sumptuous meals that brought her family and friends together. Her hobbies included knitting, sewing, yoga, fashion, photography, watching tennis, and she had an insatiable appetite for travel, exploring the world with the same curiosity and enthusiasm that she brought to all aspects of her life.

Those who knew Usha would describe her as loving, selfless, kind, sweet, resilient, and courageous. She faced life’s challenges with grace and always emerged with a smile, placing the needs of others before her own. Her legacy is one of unwavering love and the countless lives she touched through her kindness.

Usha B. Desai’s life was a testament to the power of love and the strength of family. She will be deeply missed, but her light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who loved her.
