William Lester “Bill” Struwe, 70, of Clifton, New Jersey, passed away on March 26, 2026. Born on May 26, 1955, in Passaic, New Jersey, he was the beloved husband of Janice R. Struwe, née Hokke, and the devoted father of William James Struwe, Jr. He was the cherished son of the late Lester Struwe and the late Margaret Struwe, née Bermingham.
Bill was raised in Belleville and later made Clifton his home for over 35 years. He lived a life marked by love for his family, and a warm heart that touched the lives of many. Those who knew him would remember him as a faith-filled, outgoing man who brought laughter, comfort and encouragement to family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Bill proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1973 to 1976, a period of service that reflected his sense of duty and commitment to others. Following his military service, he continued to serve his community through his work and church life. Before retirement, he was a Clifton Outreach driver where he enjoyed transporting senior citizens and handicapped residents and formed many friendships over the years. Earlier in his career, he was employed with First Aviation at Teterboro Airport, where he contributed his time and talents with the same steady work ethic that defined his life.
A man of deep faith, Bill was a member and Elder of Hope Reformed Church in Clifton. His church family was an important part of his life, and he found strength and purpose in his beliefs and in the fellowship he shared with others. His faith guided him throughout his life and was reflected in the way he treated people, with kindness and respect.
Bill was also deeply involved in veterans’ organizations and was proud to be a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 2 of Clifton, where he served as Chaplain. He was a Past Commander of Quentin Roosevelt American Legion Post #8 of Clifton, a role that reflected his enduring commitment to fellow veterans. His service and involvement were expressions of the pride he took in his country and in the camaraderie he shared with those who served alongside him.
In addition to his many commitments, Bill had a creative mind and he expressed himself through drawing and digital artwork. In his later years he enjoyed writing short stories and poetry. His artistic talent was appreciated by many, and some of his artwork was displayed at the Clifton Main Public Library and the Clifton Art Center. These works offered a glimpse into his imagination and the thoughtful, divergent nature that was such a meaningful part of who he was.
Bill will be remembered most for the love he gave to his family, the faith he lived by, and the many ways he served others throughout his life. He leaves behind a legacy of service, creativity, and kindness. His memory will be treasured by his wife, son, extended family, friends, church community, fellow veterans, and all whose lives were enriched by his presence.
